Guillaume de Machaut 'Douce Dame Jolie'
"Douce Dame Jolie", sometimes referred to only as 'Douce Dame', is a song from the 14th century, by the French composer Guillaume de Machaut. The song is a virelai, belonging to the style ars nova, and is one of the most often heard medieval tunes today. Most modern recordings omits the lyrics, however. One of the most famous musical pieces of the middle ages, 'Douce Dame' has been performed by a plethora of artists, mostly but not always in medieval style. Among others are Ayragon (with lyrics), Theo Bleckmann (with lyrics), Corvus Corax, Schelmish, Filia Irata, Två fisk och en fläsk (with lyrics), Wisby Vaganter, A La Via! (with lyrics), Blackmore's Night, Lisa Lynne, John Renbourn Group (with English lyrics) and Wolfenmond.'Douce Dame Jolie'Performed : Orlando ConsortDouce dame jolie,Pour dieu ne pensés mieQue nulle ait signorieSeur moy fors vous seulement. Douce dame jolie... *****Sweet, lovely ladyfor god's sake do not thinkthat any has sovereigntyover my heart, but you alone. For always, without treacheryCherishedHave I you, and humblyAll the days of my lifeServedWithout base thoughts.Alas, I am left beggingFor hope and relief; For my joy is at its endWithout your compassion.Sweet, lovely lady....But your sweet masteryMastersMy heart so harshly,Tormenting itAnd bindingIn unbearable love,[My heart] desires nothingbut to be in your power. And still, your own heartrenders it no relief.Sweet, lovely lady....And since my maladyWill notBe annulledWithout you, Sweet Enemy,Who takesDelight of my tormentWith clasped hands I beseechYour heart, that forgets me,That it mercifully kill meFor too long have I languished. *******Guillaume de Machaut, sometimes spelled Machault, (c. 1300 -- April 1377), was an important Medieval French poet and composer. He is one of the earliest composers for whom significant biographical information is available.Guilllaume de Machaut was "the last great poet who was also a composer," in the words of the scholar Daniel Leech-Wilkinson. Well into the 15th century, Machaut's poetry was greatly admired and imitated by other poets including the likes of Geoffrey Chaucer.Machaut was and is the most celebrated composer of the 14th century (see Medieval music). He composed in a wide range of styles and forms and his output was enormous. He was also the most famous and historically significant representative of the musical movement known as the ars nova.Machaut was especially influential in the development of the motet and the secular song (particularly the lai, and the formes fixes: rondeau, virelai and ballade). Machaut wrote the Messe de Nostre Dame, the earliest known complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass attributable to a single composer, and influenced composers for centuries to follow.

SO interesting to hear multiple versions of these songs! Check out the one recorded by David Munrow, which I was assigned in my history class and whcih can be found on the dreaded iTunes. It rocks, actually ... check it out! Lots of percussion and types of flutes. (I'm only now learning about this period; forgive me.) I like this sweet version, too. He was a very interesting composer! Prolific!

What a wonderful version. I'm usually partial to the David Munrow and the Early Music Consort of London version, but this one made an impact. Do you have CD info? 5 stars |
