It was Handel's first opera for London, and also the first Italian opera specifically composed for the London stage. ...The action is set at the time of the First Crusade (1096-99). Christian forces led by Goffredo (Godfrey of Bouillon) are laying siege to the city of Jerusalem, held by the Saracen king Argante. With Goffredo are his brother Eustazio and his daughter Almirena, who is in love with the Christian knight Rinaldo. Argante is supported by Armida, Queen of Damascus and a powerful sorceress....In a beautiful garden with singing birds, Almirenas thoughts are of love. She and Rinaldo exchange endearments until suddenly Armida abducts Almirena under cover of a cloud full of fire-breathing monsters, leaving a distraught Rinaldo. He tells Goffredo and Eustazio what has happened and Eustazio suggests he seek help from a Christian sorcerer. Rinaldo is encouraged and calls on the winds and heaven to second his revenge. It's interesting that both Horne and Podles chose to sing the second version (for Senesino, just transposed a step down to F). Both cadenzas in the B section and the da capo was clearly outrageous, but I guess La Horne could sing whichever way she wished. Considering the period, this is still an admirable performance. I wonder if Berganza ever sang this.

Exactly what I (secretely) meant. It's a bit I never heard in other coutnertenors versions, and I think he may have inspired himself of her...

"Wow" pretty much sums it all up for this one :) I've searched for the ensemble info to no avail. Pity there is next to nothing about "I Solisti Veneti" on the web, even for more recent recordings. Considering the fact that this is a re-release of a 26-year-old recording, it would be really hard to find any details.

Wow.(respectful silence)(Chapeau to the bassoonist also. Do we know who s/he is?)
