It is very common that I read questions or statements from new Atkineers saying, "How come I feel so tired?" "Why do I have such a headache?" "I have no energy what is this diet doing to me!" One of the problems is no one forewarned them about Induction flu. Induction flu is simply the body burning its last remaining glucose and stored glycogen for energy, and suffering withdrawal effects. It is very similar to what happens when runners "hit the wall" and cyclist "bonk." In addition to the physical withdrawal symptoms there are the mental symptoms as well. Think of drug addict, are they necessarily pleasant to be around or in high spirits even though they are doing something good. Well the carb addict has the same reaction; I personally was irritable for the first 2 or 3 weeks as I had to figure out how to eat, exert control over what entered my mouth, and regain new comfort foods. It is a dramatic change, and some people resist change. The good news is it is just temporary. It typically only last a few days, but for some the mental effects might last longer. It also shows you are on the right path and making true progress on getting rid of the excess fat. The silver lining is indeed that by the end if you continue the follow the plan you will be burning fat for fuel. You'll have to watch the video for my suggestions on how to lessen the effects.

You are very welcome for the videos, I am just repaying the favor of inspiration others gave to me. Keep me updated on your progress, and if you have any questions this time around, don't be afraid to ask.

Now, 6 years later, I am overweight again by about 40lbs because I went back to poor eating habits and quit exercising. Thanks to finding Bowulf's vids here I am motivated to get started again with Atkins and will begin this weekend.I am excited, because I know this will work and that I will feel alot better in about 3 weeks, after I come out of induction.

I did the Atkins diet years ago and I remember that I had this "flu" in the induction phase. I had a mild headache and felt "yucky" for about a week. After that it was smooth sailing.I was quite active at work. I only drank water. After work I would go on 3 mile power walks over varied terrain in a regional park, drinking water all along the way, refilling at fountains when I ran out.I lost just over 30 pounds in 5 months and was feeling energetic and great. Atkins does work.

Bowulf is so right! Don't give up people! Atkins really works. My obese husband is no longer obese and his cholesterol level has gone down by half in 3months he still has a way to go but the cravings are gone and WE eat less. I have always loved him but now I really fancy him again :) :) :)DON'T GIVE UP!

Sorry, my EMT classes have been busy lately. The SF candies are major problems - gastro-intestinally and craving-inducing for many people. I really recommend staying away from them due to the sugar alcohols and that it is just too much like former ways of eating. Did you have problems with chocolate before going on the diet? If so, all the more reasons to put a clear break to that activity.

Hi Kent,New watcher/subscriber here. I'm three days into Induction, and I have had a headache and am very tired. This video really helped me to understand why I feel this way. Thanks!I went shopping today, and I discovered sugar-free peanut butter chocolate candies! I was excited until I read the nutritional information. They had 22 or 24 carbs per serving! What are your thoughts about this? I know this is a stupid question, but can these be eaten in the induction phase?

Sorry no experience with water % on scales, but I can tell you how I judge hydration levels. If the urine is clear or slightly yellow, you are fine. If it's dark yellow or dark amber, you are dehydrated. Those are the clearest way to tell what's up with your body and your kidneys.

My first week on this diet was horrible head ache and very bad dizzy spells. but this went away in about 3 days.. I do have one question for you, I have a scale that tells what my H2O levels are and this morning when I weighed in my levels were at 45.6.. Do you know if that is enough water in my system or not enough....Thanks againKim

First congrats on your success so far! I have made a couple Induction friendly dessert videos that you can use for that occassional treat. Check out the 3 minute chocolate cake, mock danish, or the cheesecake without the crust. Just remember the more "desserts" (SF or not) you have the more you want them. I think you will enjoy those recipes.
