Semiramide is notoriously difficult role, like Norma it challenges all the dramatic and pyrotechnic abilities of the singer. That is why very few singers even attempt this role. This opera is very much like Norma is the respect that few singers qualify true success in the role. Bel raggio lushinghier is spectacular show stopper; it gives the soprano ample opportunity to show off their coloratura and high notes. So it is a perfect piece to use in this contest. One side note of interest: These contests are supposed to be fun, their purpose is to compare the techniques and portrayals of some of the world's finest singers. I never intended for these videos to become a breading ground for soprano bashers. So when you are posting comments, I just ask that you remain aware of others. Also, if you are posting a score lower than 3 please give some reason for it. It would only benefit the contest if we know more about what you think about the given performance.Again a score of 1-5 for singing/characterization:Elena Mosuc -- 2005Edita Gruberova -- 2000Katia Ricciarelli - 1981June Anderson -- 1987Cecilia Bartoli -- 1997Vitoria Loukianetz -- 2005Ángeles Blancas -- 2004Iano Tamar -- 1992Cecilia Gasdia -- 1994Adelaide Negri -- 1980Ermonela Jaho -- 2001Montserrat Caballe -- 1980Mariella Devia -- 1992Joan Sutherland - 1983

Apparently most Australian operas are done on the cheap. See Norma from the '70s.

This recording of the night doesn't do it justice.. you need to have been there. it was phenomenal.. 57 or not she was great that evening.. the voice wasn't her at 37 .. it was what it was .. sensational and in no need of competing with her younger self.. in fact all those late career roles in Australia were sensational.. She should have retired in '86 though.

It is rather interesting to listen to this actually. Excluding the diction and the unimaginative dynamics the ornamenti are pretty flashy, mostly staccati and descending scales. They do not add much to the drama, they are more suited to a cheerful rondo`. And one thing that susprises me is that a so called belcanto expert like Bonynge never wrote a different final cadenza for his wife.

operatwits always line up to take pot shots at the talent that lasts. here is la stupenda live, on stage, performing especially difficult music with her massive instrument at age 57 ... callas was dead at 53. nuff said.

While I agree that Joan is wonderful, Anderson and Gruberova are incredible singers.

Lol!!! I know!! Most people don't realize how difficult a high d-flat is anyway. Not to mention, she's 57 people!! Geezum crow! 5/5 for La Stupenda!

About musical philology:why many ORNAMENTI,if the singer -with the conductor- is transposing the score ad libitum?

ahh sounds like the cavatina was lowered more than normal for her, the difference between he two parts is too much

Well to the knockers, I say Bravo Joan and as someone else mentioned I would rather have Joan on a bad day and singing at her worst than a lot of other so called greats!!I was at this performance and it left shivers up my spine.

In my opinion Dame Joan sounds pretty damn good in this performance and let's not forget she was 57 after all, and I would be willing to bet that not many sopranos could pull that off with such emotion and intensity let alone being 57 and still sounding amazing!
