José Iturbi (Side 2) - Chopin - 45RPM E.P.
You can hear BOTH sides of this E. P. on Google Video: http://video.google.com/videop... father got this old record at a flea market a few years ago and it's like NEW! Here are the liner notes from the back cover (including the part about side 2):The José Iturbi story is one of color and personal drama, which makes the pianist a fertile source of human interest material. Beloved by the American public, and known to a larger segment of it than most musicians through his movie roles, Iturbi began his career as young as the child genius, Mozart. As a boy of barely seven years, José was teaching his elders the piano, and eking out his family's slim income (his father was a piano tuner) playing in the cafés and movie houses of his native Valenvia, Spain, for as long as twelve hours at a time.It has been a long road from that Spanish boyhood to his present-day roles in Hollywood and a world-famous musical career, but Iturbi moves and lives at top speed. He does nothing in a small way. His recording of the famous Chopin Polonaise in A-Flat passed the million mark in sales, and was the first Red Seal record to achieve this milestone. In Beverly Hills, Iturbi live in a climate that recalls his native Spain. There he often spends a musical evening with other famous instrumentalists, such as Heifetz, Horowitz, and Rubinstein. Iturbi loves good wines and has a collection of famous vintages in his cellars. He also shines in the kitchen and can discuss a Spanish sauce as facilely as a sonata. Iturbi leads a full life, never letting a day pass without a stint at his instrument, but still finds time to audition and encourage aspiring young musicians.SIDE 2POLONAISE IN A-FLAT, Op. 53, No. 6 (Chopin)Iturbi's superb rendering of this glittering concert favorite earned him the tribute of a gold record, presented to him by RCA Victor as tangible evidence of the fact that his recording had sold over a million copies.

A very dry and courtly opening, followed by a dance-like interpretation; a Polonaise is a dance, after all, but most pianists do not emphasize this, even Artur Rubinstein misses it. Most pianists also don't point the dotted rhythms either; look at the printed score and you will see how faithful Iturbi is to it.

I am almost speechless at hearing this specific recording from my childhood. Never thought I would hear it again by Iturbi. Was a revelation to me, representing my earliest exposure to classical music. Was also my brother's favorite. Loved my parents for introducing this to us. I'm thinking this is from the 1940s, but the 45rpm format throws me. I seem to remember either a 78rpm or an extended play 78. Thanks so much for this video-audio. Made my day.
