Fair enough. But one interesting thing to consider before signing up for a long-term materialist paradigm is - 'Where is consciousness in the physical world? and what evidence do we have in the physical world that consciousness has a physical existence?'. Until that question is adequately answered, then materialists will not have any empirical evidence to support their idea that consciousness is of the physical dimension.

Awareness also comes and goes, depending upon brain activity (such as in sleep). You're right, this is not proof, but it is strong evidence to support my point.

What you're talking about is a change in consciousness. But more fundamental than changes in consciousness is awareness itself. Consider: Sensations come and go, thoughts come and go, emotions come and go, but who is aware of all of these changes? Awareness/Pure consciousness <--- that is what Eastern mystics have known for centuries.

No. It is the interplay of matter and energy that creates conciousness. Clearly your conciousness is tied to your body. Just have a few stiff drinks and you will experience this first hand.

I think I just developed a man-crush on Ramachandran! That was awsome!

or another way of putting it, is he saying out of matter comes consciousness and consciousness can not exisit without matter???
Dandaniels1978 (September 2, 2008 at 1:57 pm)
So is this guy saying that matter creates consciousness? I'm not so sure....

Sure, if you mean proof in the rigid mathematical sense, or absolute certainty. But saying that all that theories have done is survived falsification is an inaccurate position to take, since there is certainly more to a theories success than just surviving falsification |
