One evening during a Seattle Jazz Alley appearance some 18 or so years ago I observed Freddie just chillin' by himself during a break, so I approached him, thanked him for comin' to Seattle, and stated I'd been an admirer of his since the 'First Light' CTI days. We spoke for 10 minutes! As a hobbyist-player myself his words of wisdom to me that night were: "You play the trumpet but you make love to the Flugelhorn." I've since switched to piano, but I've never forgotten the lesson. Thx Mr. H.

I don't believe Freddie renamed the song. Others did.Freddie himself announced that it was dedicated to Charlie Parker - who is "Bird".

The tune is "Birdlike". It is a blues written by Freddie Hubbard and dedicated to Charlie Parker ("Bird").

apparently his lips became damaged from a gig with John Faddis, where they were havng a high note/loudness/speeed competition style play off.....massive shame.

ive heard that his lips are scarred from literally smoking crack. It sounds like its made up.....but him and this cat Barry Ries use to smoke crack out of a metal pipe that apparently got too hot.

What tune is this?

Incredible trumpet playing. Precise swinging articulation.Fantastic. And a very original sense of harmony. There isn't one trumpet player out there that hasn't been influenced by him. And none even come close.

Personally, I prefer Freddie over Miles by a long shot. |
