I think that we learned much from Karpov and the positional play of today stem from his games. He played very beautiful.

Karpov is a great grandmaster and a gracious competitor. His games are also a great wealth of chess knowledge especially on defense, which is very important. Karpov rules!

Karpov rocks. Would have been great if Fischer played him in 1975.

Though I admired his playing, I didn't care for him personally while he was champion (thanks partly to anti-soviet bias among western writers). All that changed when he lost the title to Kasparov. I was amazed at what a gracious loser he could be. An example which, unfortunately, subsequent champions have not always followed. And he's still playing while his younger successor has retired. Play on Tolya!

Most people who have met him, say he is a very kind person indeed.I was not in favour of Karpov in the '80s, but as I grow up, I like him more and more. |
