It is possible to control fan speed on late model Compaq Deskpro EN computers. This works on all of the desktop, SFF and mini tower/desktop convertible systems.Leave a comment if you try this on yours. I would be interested in hearing about how it works. You can get SpeedFan at http://www.almico.com/speedfan...

Hey thanks I just was wondering, thats why I asked. It never occured to me that this was important. Also the fan(i think) on my computer(dell) makes a funny noise sometimes (kind of a fast ticking/rattle). I usually just lightly hit the top and it usuall stops however not the best fix. any suggestions? ps. I couldn't fix it even if you told me, so just looking for an answer.

These things run almost any OS you can throw at them and come out looking good. I've run DOS, Linux, Windows 98, 2000, and XP.The only real limitation is the maximum of 512MB RAM that you can install. (You can put more in, but the BIOS says "uh-uh" to that and will not let you continue until you take out the extra.)

The Deskpro EN was a very long lived computer. You probably have a much earlier model than I do. These are 2001-2003 models.Your processor type won't make a difference, as this functionality is centered across a few components on the motherboard. The fan controller and temperature reporting IC is from Analog Devices.

It depends. I've been thrilled with most of the Dell systems I've owned--only one has been a disappointment.

The only side effect you might notice right away is the louder fan noise. Good quality fans (which all too few PCs have) should handle running reliably in every part of their speed range. If you move more air through your computer, it may pick up dust more quickly.

Sometimes you can be surprised, although that wasn't the case this time. :-)Only today are fan control and temperature reporting becoming popular items to have in a computer. So it's kind of surprising to see an older system support it so well.

Most computers only run their fans at one speed. If you have noisy fans or fans that don't move enough air, being able to control their speed is really nice.Only today is this becoming a common thing for motherboards to support. Even today some don't allow much fan control, or control of every fan connector they have. The Deskpro (made in 2001-2002) is unique in that you can control its fans through a wide range of speeds.

what does this do. does it help?

Cool, now i'm on the lookout for a Deskpro EN.I own a Compaq Presario 5365 with an SiS 530 chipset and an AMD K6-2, and tried speedfan. It detected no fans that I could adjust, and it detected one temperature sensor, which it read -1 degrees! Oh well, what do you expect out of an 8 year old computer which is low end even for it's time? lol
