true. but that does not mean that we should try to change word definitions to suit us. any person who has a clue about music can tell that Rakim is leagues above 50, but that doesn't mean that we shud try giving them seperate labels with words that have an established meaning.all that needs to be said is that Rakim is a better rapper than 50. no need to try to give Rakim a special title for his profession which ultimately is no different from the word 'rapper'.

it's somewhat annoying to see somebody say something like "50 Cent is a rapper, but Rakim is an MC" as if 'MC' has a kind of prestige behind it. No...50 Cent is a rapper/MC and Rakim is also a rapper/MC. the difference is that Rakim is (in my opinion) actually a good rapper/MC and 50 isn't.it's a bit like claiming there's a difference between a vocalist and a singer...

there is no difference between an MC and a rapper. ultimately, a 'rapper' is somebody who raps. the only reason why so many ppl try to pretend there is a difference between the two is cos the old school and underground fans want to disassociate themselves and their artists from the all the crappy new school and pop-rap artists...and i don't blame them. but MC and rapper are interchangeable whether you like it or not.
