How beautifully moving! I feel in love with this piece the first time I heard it. Now that I know some of the historical significance of this piece in relation to Russia and the end of the war it has a new place in my heart.

ghd, thank you so much, it is interesting to know these things, and then one easily can understand the feelings avoked from this music, plus emotions re Horowitz' visit to his homeland

jillgivler, I saw your comment about Brahms waltz in A flat major. The same tearful feeling it gives me. I connect it with some melancholy film, but cannot remember the title. The music is very beautiful and moving. But NOTHING beats this wonderfully played "Träumerei"!!

Researched it a wee bit more. The reason so many of the older people in the audience are crying is because Traumerei was what was played across the Soviet Union when Germany surrendered in 1945.

Oh I see, thank you! Time for some "Träumerei" after all the horrors and trials. Memories and dreams of deceased dears, and of a better future

And is continually played at the memorial apparently
ghd1340 (August 16, 2008 at 7:46 pm)
Because that is the piece of music that was played when the war ended.

I .read somewhere that Schumann's Träumerei has a special significance to the Russians and that partly explains why they are so moved, but I have forgotten what it was. I think he was the world's best pianist! This is so beautiful

Credo sia il brano che sento più mio... e saranno ormai più di 5 anni che se mi forzo a scegliere un brano sopra tutti, dico Träumerei. Panta rei, ma queste dolci note no, rimarranno sempre sovrane nel mio cuore.
