Sorry that comment was a reply, didn't know it would appear at the top out of context. Not meant to rag on JM he's a master without a doubt.

Zappa was a rock guitarist and literally erupting with ideas in every avenue of music. Never could JMcL rock like Zappa. Also, in terms of jazz rock, FZ played much more modally, and often strove for ambience, not freneticism. Just my opinion, of course, but you can go through Zappa's catalog and find so much to love and hate. JM is amazing, but more of a one-trick pony. He couldn't write songs like "Uncle Rhemus," but he could diddle around in 1 key for 2 hours any day of the week.

Alan Holdsworth was Zappa´s favorite guitarist I believe

i read an interview with Frank where he said (apologies if I misquote) "You would have to be a moron not to appreciate JMcL's technique, the guy can play the guitar like it's a machine gun, but I'm not always enthusiastic about the notes he plays)Zappa also rated Brian May and Alan Holdsworth as excellent guitarists. I've got a vhs recording of Pasha's Love from Australian TV, I'll try to upload it soon...
