The song Follow Me Up To Carlow tells the story of the Battle of Glenmalure, one of the victories of the Irish over the English at the end of the sixteenth century in the Desmond Rebellions.Against all expectations Feach MacHugh O'Byrne defeated Lord Grey Wilton at Glenmalure in the Wicklow Mountains. Using his stronghold on Ballincor Mountain as operating base O'Byrne launched a campaign against the English and it is said that the tune of this song was already played by then. The lyrics themselves are more recent though. The campaign ended with the capture and the subsequently beheading of O'Bryne in 1597 during the Nine Years War.From Planxty's first album "Planxty".

"Now for Black FitzWilliam's head, we'll send it over dripping red, to Liza and her ladies". Fucking great! That's how you handle shit when an oppressor brings it to you.

. Fiach was one of the last of the Gaelic Chieftains surrender to Queen Lizzie. Wicklow was the last county set up under British rule due to the O'Byrne's , O'Tooles and the Kavanaghs being a feckin nuisance :). From the 12th century these clans were notorious for coming into Dublin, annoying the citizens, gettin drunk in the taverns Christchurch . Every so often some would be axed and their heads put on spikes on the city walls as a deterrent . Usually worked for a week or two :)
