This was a sympathy win; there had been so much flak given to the Academy that year for not having a black best actor that this was given to quiet down the Spike Lee's of the world... note his mention of 'two birds with one stone', a reference to Hally Berry, a black actress, that also won.

Crowe's performance off the hook?Things associated with a beautiful mind shouldn't be referred to as "off the hook." I go as far as to say that film was less deserving of the award than Crash. If there's anything you should be irate about, its that A beautiful mind got recognized over memento, the lord of the rings,and gosford park. Good thing denzel wasn't snubbed.
