Its actually much quicker in real time speed, this was probably filmed this way initially for the engineers to analyze the rocket and engine behavior during lift off however its also visually very powerful and is often used by non engineers for dramatic effect. To see an excellent example of how a Saturn V lifts off in real time check out "Apollo 8 launch" submitted by ugowar.

sure this here is german work... the americans took over the german war rocket ingeneur Werner von Braun. while others had to hang. ;o) they weren't useful for the USA! thats what i call true democracy! it gives a quite strange light on the USA. this man Werner von Braun also was responsible for the death of many people! but he was useful for the run to space. I am german and the war was the worst ever what happend. but in this case USA took profit cause of it today they often still do the same

Good point - but I remember using a university intranet 30 years ago, playing "Dungeons and Dragons" in real time with someone 50 miles away. What I'm getting at is that getting to the Moon represented a peak of some ground-breaking, world-unifying kind. Going back to the moon may have some utility but will not be groundbreaking. Going to Mars will be pointless and probably not practicable. We (humanity) have lost a lot of hope and common purpose since those days.

We're hardly headed for the dark ages. Just think about how we're watching this and communicating for proof. We can use our relatively inexpensive computers and access information on anything and everything and communicate with other people around the world instantaneously. The number of technological advancements we've had in the last 20 years is absolutely staggering.

You know, i live in my village for thirty years now and i only recently found out that the large rusty "flowerpot" in the local park is acutally a part of a WW2 V2 rocket. Wich was designed by Werner von Braun, just like this epic monster. The same man who was responsible for blowing up a packed movie theatre in Antwerp also made the machine that allowed humanities finest hour. I'm still not shure he was a hero or a villain.

Its sad to reflect on the broken dreams of youth. That was for now the peak of our achievement. Compared to 1969, we are now headed for the dark ages.

We watched & marvelled at the time. Its all we ever wanted to do when we grew up. These pictures capture the power and still make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up after all these years! May thanks for posting
