No. She was under repairs in a couple of non-canon books. She had just fought off 4 Jem'Hadar ships and had stopped at a station to get repairs, but were stalled while Picard, Geordi, and Data were on a mission.

Repairs from? This episode takes place a bit after stardate 51145.3. First Contact took place on stardate 50893.5, a year before this. The theater of war is a big place, and there are other battles to be fought. The Enterprise just missed out on this one.

I think the Sovereign was elsewhere in the fightning. As for the "Big E", she was undergoing repairs and Picard was on a separate mission alltogether.

That and the fleet would be sandwiched between a force double in number and against a station that has been fortified to fight against a previous Klingon attempt to take the station. Surrounded is no way to fight.

The Dominion have proven their ability to penetrate cloaking technology with polaron beams. If the Defiant were ahead of the fleet, cloaked, they would be damaged and disabled far sooner than they would if they were at full sheilds and with the ablative hull plating operating.
