General Wellesley (David Troughton) is saved by Sgt Sharpe (Sean Bean) in director T. Clegg's 1993 British television series adaptation of Bernard Cornwell's great historical fiction novels. Bean is dead-on as the hardscrabble, professional soldier up from the ranks Sharpe. Brian Cox is his usual brilliant self, playing Major Hogan as if Cornwell wrote it for him (except for the extra poundage). David Troughton is excellent as the future Lord Wellington. This is the first episode in the series, putting the books in Chronological order covering the European campaigns of Sharpe. The production value, especially some of the action scenes are wanting, and the music is often a real problem (who thinks it's a good idea to have anything that sounds like an electric guitar under a period piece from the early 1800's?), but the acting is superlative from top to bottom, and of course Cornwell's stories, make it well worth watching.

Ref. the electric guitar part - I heard that it was included to "give the illusion of cavalry sabres" - which sounds like a lot of rubbish I know, but there you go.Good TV series, though !

Did you realised? When the third horseman is charging he has a hat, but when he falls from the horse he hasn´t. A little bit strange, isn´t it?
