HV30 is nearly identical to the HV20. The only differences are 1)the HV30 is black, and 2)The NTSC version of HV30 has an additional 30p recording mode. Everything else is exactly the same. The image quality is phenmoninal.

One reason for a smaller optical zoom is that this camera has a large (and better quality) image sensor. A big sensor can not have such a wide range - its a bit like with film where a larger guage like 35mm has a more shallow depth of field to 16mm or super 8. Or something like that anyway.

The local Circuit City was trying to get rid of it since the HV-30 hit the market. We got our HV20 for $430 or so.
