Britain's Best Breaks ~ Newquay

Cornwall's finest resort, Newquay, is steeped in over 1600 years of history and can enviably boast over seven miles of beautiful, unspoilt sandy beaches.Early history shows that Newquay, originally called "Towan Blistra" was at one time nothing more than a fortified cliff settlement. The name Newquay was derived fromthe building of a New Quay back in 1439. This quay allowed the town to develop as an important fishing port handling catches of huge shoals of pilchards. The arrival of the Industrial Revolution and the decline of the pilchard shoals saw Newquay change from an important fishing port to a busy shipping port, handling tin, lead and china clay.
