He built up our military to the point that we were in an arms race with the U.S.S.R. The arms race helped to topple the U.S.S.R. because they were going broke trying to keep up with the U.S. from what I've read. Gorbechev had had enough and the U.S.S.R. allowed the Soviet Bloc countries their freedom. Or something to that effect.

how did THIS SPEECH end the USSR tho? The wall didn't even come down until 10 months after Reagan left office, and over 2.5 after this speech.
