These two gentlemen are some of the best in the business. Johnny had training by Du Sable man Walter Dyett. Davis had little training other than his own. What amazing talent no matter what.

One of my favourite albums"Tough Tenors" with these two virtuosos and Junior Mance is still available via Amazon. I bought it recently to replace my old vinyl mono copy. Buy it !!

Excellent, I'll check them out. A beautiful album is Paul Gonsalves with Sonny Stitt, called Salt n Pepper (on Impulse!).

Yeah - Gonsalves is another of my 'all-time greats' - I've put quite a few clips up of him already as wellBob

Wow! THANK YOU! i'd love to see more solo stuff of both Lockjaw and Griffin, as well as more duet recordings. These guys are amonst the greatest saxophonists; their whole approach to a song is what jazz is all about...I want to get a rare album they did together playing Monk tunes. The Fox also did an amzazing ballad album with Paul Gonsalves, another legend... |
