MMA fighters are arguably NOT martial artists any more than boxers. Theyre extremely trained fighters who employ strategy, skill, endurance, & are bound by rules of their sport. While highly skilled, none are the typical person that needs "self-defense". Theyre all huge, chiseled, and quite intimidating. Who would assault them?True martial arts are for normal people...MMA guys are anything but normal. They train 5-7 days/wk & punish themselves in ways normal people wont.

Well you know, when it comes down to it it's all about the particular person and his way of training, rather than what particular style you're into :) I've seen Aikido-people who're very proficient "fighers" (although not pro in any sense), and I've seen MMA-people who uses "Aikido principles" incredibly well. You can find good stuff in all styles, what's important is the reason you practice...today's lesson aside, yeah, it would be cool to see someone like Endo vs Royce Gracie ^^

Ah well thanks, never realised it wasn't for fighting, but it crosses my mind what would happen if you chucked one of these senseis into an MMA ring and had to self defend against someone like royce gracieIs it mainly just useful against people that don't know how to fight, like on the street?

Are you talking about using Aikido for fighting, or for self defence? Because there's a huge difference, and Aikido is not about fighting (and, of course, catching real self defence situations on tape is pretty rare)

oh that's fine, im not saying he has to prove anything, im sure he's great at what he does, what i was after was to watch people fighting using real aikido in a street fight, cause i havent been able to find any

i cant answer you on that beacause i do not know.however i do know that that is not his purpose in pursuing aikido...so why should be have to prove any such skills? |
