Wolves can be weak at times but they sure make up for it with cunning intelligence...

huh? im just saying tht im sorry for the buffalos and all but the wolves have to eat....?

the problem with that statement is that, forgive the stereotype, the majority of people who make that statement regarding wolves have a problem with hunting. humans have been hunter-gatherers for around TWO MILLION years, relying heavily on meat from herd animals. only in the last 12,000 years has this changed. now you tell me that i don't have a right to take an animal that will die in seconds, responsibly care for the meat and feed my family but these wolves can brutalize their prey.

"all's fun and games in hunting camp until we run out of beer" and frankly this portrayal of hunters pisses me off, as does the idiot wearing the shirt. it's true, there are bad hunters. there are also good hunters who adhere to codes of ethics. Hunters are the ones who pay the bill to the department of fish and wildlife. The DFW allots tags with the carrying capacity of the land in mind. it is our investment. unfortunately there are people who take advantage of that, and they belong behind bars

sorry my two comments on the top were intended to be replies... are you suggesting that hunting guides poach and promote poaching year-round? i personally am an avid hunter and proponant of hunting. i follow strict moral values and NEVER take a shot unless i know it will lead to a quick death of a legal animal, observing rules of fair chase. while i do agree with you that there are people who violate these rules, they give the moral hunters a bad name. Too often i see tee shirts like...

they also rely on safe places for calving. with more and more such places facing development, that's an added strain on the herds. wolves are predators, they take opportunities to obtain food as they present themselves. and there is no better situation than elk crammed into what little range they can turn to, with vulerable calves and fat cows. Wolves should be preserved. but that should be confined to the national parks.

Yes, it's true, humans have drastically altered, overexploited, and senselessly wiped out the great herd animals of the planes. Humans have drastically altered the predator populations as well. with this in mind, we need to think in the best interests of the wildlife we still have. Wolves were here first, true. But the least of our ungulates' problems is predation alone. winter range, low-lying prime feed is often the only lifeline for elk and other herbivores.
