No. Julie was simply passed up after much discussion. Even Rex Harrison wasn't a sure thing. They asked people like Carey Grant but he insisted they cast Rex Harrison. Julie was cast in "The Sound..." because Robert Wise had seen her in "My Fair Lady" and her star was rising due to "Camelot" and Mary Poppins so she got the role.

Hi, not to quibble but I disagree with your rationale. I think Julie better suited. I adore Marnie Nixon but she is just trying to'sound' like what Audrey Hepburn would if she could sing. A little too brilliantly. Ultimately I find the film stagey and overdone and Audrey good but not great.

I disagree because I never once found Audrey believable as a flower girl. I couldn't buy the transformation as her "princess" quality shone through even under the dirt - she seemed awkward in her "guttersnipe" role. I like Julie because I know she CAN be classy, and her transformation seems more believable to me because I wouldn't expect her to go from ordinary to ethereal, as Audrey did; the jump is too high for me. I do agree that her voice is too flawless in the gutterspeak, though.

Singing ability aside, Audrey is a better choice as she is more believable metamorphosing from a guttersnipe into a lady. Julie is beautiful but not princess like Audrey. Julie's voice is too perfect and refined as a cockney flower girl. Marnie Nixon's voice is better suited for the role here.

Well, they didn't turn down Julie for the roll, she had just auditioned for that position in the Sound of Music and Lerner and Lowe told her to take it instead if she got it.

I loved Hepburn even though I thought it was stupid of the producers to turn down Julie for that roll on My Fair Lady. No need to be catty.

Even with the accent it still sounds like Julie Andrews. I wasn't expecting that. lolBut we should be happy that she didn't get this role because look at all the other roles she did get that we ADORE! =D I just hope she's happy with how things have played out.

I love this song, and Julie Andrews does it the best. However, like amiec said, if she had gotten the role in the film, who knows who would've been Mary Poppins. And let's face it, Julie was born for that role.

i think it's great she didn't get the film role. if she didn't, she wouldn't have been our mary poppins and i don't think ANY other actress could have been better.

i totaally agree that julie should have got film role but i guess coz she was not that well known (at the time) in the U.S.thats why they went for audrey who had made some good films by then.my fav was ROMAN HOLIDAY,cant imagine anyone but audrey and gregory peck in that film...brilliant |
