Yes, if you are stuck on a crossing, get out of the car and as far away from it as possible. If a fast train hits the car, glass and other debris will fly in many directions, as shown here.

Most crossings in the UK have barriers. I don't know why some are without them. It may be a matter of how fast trains travel at that location. The one at Bucknell station, seen in the clip of the old guy driving into a train, is one of Network Rail's top ten "abused" crossings. The small car is a three-wheeled Reliant Rialto, an updated version of the Robin. It can be driven on a full motorcycle licence.

That would be preferable. I thought it might increase the shock value (it's the only thing some people understand).

kinda barbaric don't you think? unless its a dead pig corpse like they use on myth busters.

there is no barrier that comes down to stop cars? the states have it on most tracks.

Here in Wales, it's rather different. The safety clothing of choice is a miner's helmet with a good supply of batteries for the lamp.In the event of a horseless carriage breaking down upon a level crossing, the driver is required to send the flagman up the track to meet any approaching train and signal it to stop. Driver and passengers, suitably helmeted, must remain in the vehicle, singing "Bread of Heaven" or "Sospan Fach", until either rescue or the train arrives.

Actually I forgot an important point. In England, and as we drive on the wrong side of the road, we sometimes forget to look the right way before we drive across the tracks. Because the 500+ ton (tonne) monster with a big yellow front and bright lights, travelling at over 80 MPH can be perceived to be on the wrong track, it can be easy not to see it. That is why we have to trust the train driver to see our high vis jacket whilst seated in our car. I hope this clears everything up.
