The Hawker Hunter was a single engine British jet fighter aircraft of the 1950s and 1960s. Powered by the non-afterburning Rolls Royce Avon axial flow turbojet, with the first prototype flying in 1951. Britain's first indigenous swept wing fighter it briefly held the world speed record in 1953. It formed the backbone of the RAF fighter force from 1954-1961 and remained in front line service until the early seventies. Music: Sparta - "Assemble The Empire".

one thing i remember, i was 7 years old in 1987, my family and i were heading to Beirut,we were stuck in a huge car traffic, when an awful sound was approaching from behind and suddenly a hunter flew like 30 meters above us,can't describe the noise from hell and how everybody got shit scared inside the cars.I remember clearly seeing the pilot... These machines are extremely noisy!!

Not really!indeed the Leb air force still have 8 of them, but during the 2007 conflict with Nahr el Bared radicals, the RAF worked or at least tried to make them flyable and also tried to adapt launchers for modern rockets, it seems that the project was abandonned, modified Gazelle helos were used to launch rockets instead.

I flew in one of the twin seat trainers from Chivenor in 1970.The gunsight on these was interesting, you closed one eye to fire rockets and the other eye to fire the cannons it had two reticles.

Thanks for the video. My late cousin used to fly a Hunter in the Indian Air force and shot down a Pakistani F-86 Sabre on the 12th of December 1971.

Sonicbomb, your wrong with the retirement date, there are still two Hunters in RAF service, F.58's ZZ190 and ZZ191, also the Lebanese air force still fly around 8 examples on operational combat combat sorties against guerillas

This is a very interesting video of the Hawker Hunter, that magnificent British jet fighter of yesteryear. Ah, those were the days when the UK actually had an arms industry and exported quality jet-fighters and other military aeroplanes, with the other engines of war. Thanks, Sonicbomb, for posting this.Nostalgia makes me ask: when was this clip filmed? It looks to me to be about 1960, maybe a little later. Am I close?
